NYCRUNS Brooklyn Experience Half Marathon 2025

I’m supporting Brooklyn Defender Services.
Hi all,
Many of you I’ve worked with already know, but in less than two weeks—on April 27th—I’ll be running the NYCRUNS Brooklyn Half Marathon. This 21.1-kilometer (13.1 miles for the Americans!) course winds through some of the most iconic neighborhoods in Brooklyn.
As part of this event, runners have the option to fundraise for local partner charities. I’ve chosen to support Brooklyn Defender Services, a public defense organization committed to providing high-quality legal representation to individuals who cannot afford it.
While I got into running to lose weight, I think I've also come to recognize it as a way to build community. While I initially hesitated in starting a fundraiser when signing up for this half, when I read through this charity and their tenets, I thought it aligned closely with the experience and lessons that I've been able to accumulate since I've been outside of school. With this fundraiser, I hope to reconcile both my work and personal life in progressing a little good in the world!
My first job out of college has given me a deeper understanding of the US legal system and the important role expert testimony and other legal resources play in determining outcomes. While the legal system aspires to be fair and impartial, we also know that access to high-quality representation—and the tools that support it—can come with a steep price tag. Many individuals and communities are shut out from these resources simply because they cannot afford them.
With this fundraiser, I hope to contribute—however modestly—to bridging that gap and supporting an organization working to level the playing field.
Thanks for reading and wish me luck on race day!
