This race feels like a full-circle moment for me!

 

I moved to Brooklyn in May 2025, and the first way I got to know my new neighborhood was by running throughout McCarren Park, where this race begins. Those early miles helped me feel grounded in a brand new place. Not long after, I joined Understood.org. Both were big life changes. And both introduced me to incredible people and helped me build a sense of home.

 

Understood.org helps build a world where learning and thinking differences are understood, supported, and celebrated. This work reflects values I’ve carried with me for years. Some of my earliest elementary school memories are helping my classmates in special education classrooms with their reading and writing. That experience opened my eyes to how powerful early intervention and meaningful support can be for kids. In college, I tutored high school students with learning and thinking differences. I worked at summer camps helping elementary, middle, and high schoolers strengthen their reading and math skills before the new school year. And a couple years ago, I had the privilege of mentoring a high school senior through the college application process. 

 

Again and again, I’ve seen how the right support at the right time can change a young person’s trajectory.

 

On top of that, being active has always been part of who I am. I feel the most clear-headed, happy, and energized when I’m playing a sport or going for a run, so this race is the perfect way to combine two things that matter deeply to me: movement and mission.
