THE CHALLENGES
What you didn't think there would be a Subway System Challenge because we're putting on all these cool races? Think again! Subway System Challenge 2021 kicks off on Memorial Day!
We're looking forward to many new NYC adventures this year and SSC 2021 will be diving deep into your favorite neighborhoods and ours. On your journey, you'll receive digital badges tracking your progress, telling you about the neighborhoods on the route, and noting when you perform a particularly impressive feat relative to your overall goal. Of course we'll have a digital bib and finisher certificate for you as well. Want to help us plot the journey? Tell us about your neighborhood!
There are three distinct challenges to choose from and you have until September 12 (15 weeks) to complete them.
Passenger: The City Hall Station was the first to open in NYC in 1904. The train doesn't stop there anymore but you can Run or Walk 190.4 Miles on the rails this Summer. (Less than two miles a day)
Conductor: The first attempt at underground transit in NYC was back in 1869 when Alfred Ely Beach built a pneumatic tube beneath Broadway. It was just 312 feet long but over 400,000 people managed to take a ride during its single year of operation. Run or Walk 312 Miles on the rails, visit every station, and see just about everything to be seen! (Less than three miles a day)
Operator: After over a century of expansions and introduction of new stations, there are now 665 mainline track miles in the NYC Subway. Run or Walk those 665 miles on the rails and master the entire system! (Less than 7 miles a day)
If you want to bike part of the distance, that's fine too. Just choose one of the Helter Skelter divisions.
This challenge should provide you an excellent test of fitness and an opportunity to plan and push your training a bit as well, no matter how many miles you run weekly or which challenge you choose.
100% of donations and a portion of the proceeds will go towards supporting youth running in New York City via organizations such as Run4Fun. Run4Fun is a Brooklyn based non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the wellness and development of youth mentally, physically, educationally, and socially through running and a healthy lifestyle.
